AmaWaterways Africa Itineraries: Which Safari & Cruise Fits You?
I compare AmaWaterways Africa itineraries and CroisiEurope by safari region, cruise nights and pace, so you can choose the trip that fits you.
If you want AmaWaterways Africa to combine a wildlife cruise with a first safari, I would start with Iconic Africa: Cape Town, the Chobe River, Victoria Falls and a Greater Kruger safari stay. If you have less time, From the Cape to the Falls gives you a nine-night journey centered on Cape Town, Chobe and the Falls.
For you, the better choice might be Kenya’s plains, Namibia’s dunes or a journey with CroisiEurope. The most useful distinction is where you spend your cruise nights: AmaWaterways sails the Chobe aboard Zambezi Queen; CroisiEurope combines Chobe outings with an overnight cruise on Lake Kariba.
Here is how I would help you choose among these safari and cruise packages. AmaWaterways also offers Egypt itineraries, but this guide focuses on its Southern and East African wildlife journeys.

Compare AmaWaterways Africa itineraries at a glance
Start with the experience you most want to have on land. Several itineraries share the same ship, so choosing by ship alone will not tell you which trip suits you.
These are the published base itinerary lengths checked in September 2026. Optional extensions and your flights from home add time; I would confirm the day-by-day program for your departure before booking.
| Itinerary | Base length | Chobe cruise nights | When I would put it on your shortlist |
|---|---|---|---|
| From the Cape to the Falls | 9 nights | 3 | You want Cape Town, Chobe and three nights around Victoria Falls. |
| Discover Africa | 9 nights | 4 | You want Cape Town and Victoria Falls, with an extra night aboard. |
| Iconic Africa | 14 nights | 3 | You want Cape Town, Chobe, Victoria Falls and a Greater Kruger lodge safari. |
| Stars of South Africa | 14 nights | 4 | You want a similar Southern Africa combination with more cruise time. |
| Wildlife & the Falls | 12 nights | 4 | You want Chobe, Victoria Falls and Greater Kruger, starting in Johannesburg. |
| Classic Kenya & Southern Africa | 14 nights | 3 | You want Chobe and the Falls followed by Nairobi, Amboseli and the Maasai Mara. |
| Golden Trails of East Africa | 16 nights | 4 | You want Tanzania’s Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti alongside Chobe and the Falls. |
| African Wonders & the Skeleton Coast | 15 nights | 3 | You want Namibia’s dunes, coast and Etosha as well as Chobe and the Falls. |
| Rivers & Rails of Africa | 13 nights | 4 | You want Cape Town, Chobe and Victoria Falls with a Rovos Rail journey. |
My first question would be: which part of this trip would you be most disappointed to miss? Your answer usually narrows nine itineraries to two.
For a shorter trip: From the Cape to the Falls or Discover Africa
These two nine-night packages are the clearest example of why I compare the overnight schedule with you.
From the Cape to the Falls divides its core stay into three nights in Cape Town, three aboard Zambezi Queen and three at Victoria Falls. Discover Africa has three nights in Cape Town, four aboard and two at the Falls.
I would favor From the Cape to the Falls if you want more time around Victoria Falls. I would lean toward Discover Africa if waking up on the river is the part you are most excited about.
Both include wildlife experiences, but neither base itinerary adds several nights at a Greater Kruger lodge. If repeated land safaris are central to your plans, I would consider one of the longer combinations below.
Also leave room in your calendar for international travel. A nine-night package does not mean you need only nine nights away from home. My Chobe River cruise guide explains daily life aboard and the difference between a boat safari and sleeping on the river.
For a varied first safari: Iconic Africa or Stars of South Africa
Iconic Africa is where I would begin if you tell me, “I want Cape Town, a river cruise and proper time at a safari lodge.” Its 14 nights combine Cape Town, three Chobe cruise nights, three nights at Victoria Falls, Johannesburg and a Greater Kruger stay.
The appeal is variety: city touring, wildlife from the water and game drives from a lodge. You get several ways to experience Southern Africa within one coordinated journey.
Stars of South Africa also includes Cape Town, Chobe, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg and Greater Kruger, with four cruise nights and two at the Falls. I would compare these two by their exact hotels, outings and departure dates as well as that one-night difference.
For either trip, be comfortable changing bases. If unpacking repeatedly sounds tiring, I would help you simplify your safari rather than choose the longest program simply because it includes more places.
What if you have already visited Cape Town?
Wildlife & the Falls deserves a look. Its 12-night base journey begins in Johannesburg and combines four cruise nights with Victoria Falls and Greater Kruger. I would consider it if you want the river-and-lodge combination and prefer to spend your time elsewhere than Cape Town.
For East Africa: Classic Kenya or Golden Trails
I would choose Classic Kenya & Southern Africa when Amboseli and the Maasai Mara are high on your list. The 14-night base route begins in Johannesburg, includes three Chobe cruise nights and Victoria Falls, then continues to Kenya. Its Kenya portion includes Nairobi, Amboseli and the Mara.
Cape Town is an optional extension on this itinerary. Do not assume it is included because it appears in other AmaWaterways Africa packages. Zanzibar is another extension to discuss if you want time at the beach afterward.
If your wish list centers on Tanzania, I would compare Golden Trails of East Africa instead. That 16-night itinerary combines four Chobe cruise nights and Victoria Falls with a Tanzania route including Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
I would make this choice around the parks you want to visit and the month you can travel. Adding another safari region brings more travel between destinations, so I would protect time for the wildlife experiences that matter most to you. My South Africa vs. Kenya safari comparison can help you think through that preference.
For Namibia’s landscapes: African Wonders & the Skeleton Coast
If dunes and desert landscapes excite you as much as wildlife, I would shortlist African Wonders & the Skeleton Coast. Its 15-night base route starts in Johannesburg, combines three Chobe cruise nights with Victoria Falls, then continues into Namibia.
The Namibia portion includes Windhoek, the Namib desert region, Swakopmund and the coast, plus Etosha. I would recommend it when you want a substantial change of scenery during your safari.
Cape Town is an optional extension here, too. Before adding it, I would look at your total time away and how you feel about the flights and transfers already in the route.
For a rail journey: Rivers & Rails of Africa
Rivers & Rails of Africa combines Cape Town, four Chobe cruise nights and Victoria Falls with Rovos Rail. Its published base length is 13 nights.
I would recommend it when the train journey is one of your reasons for visiting Africa. If a multi-night safari lodge stay is your priority, I would begin with Iconic Africa, Stars of South Africa or Wildlife & the Falls instead.
AmaWaterways vs. CroisiEurope in Africa
CroisiEurope is worth comparing if you want a small ship, safari outings and lodge time in Southern Africa. Its African Dream and Zimbabwean Dream each carry 16 passengers, compared with 28 aboard Zambezi Queen.
The routes are the bigger difference. CroisiEurope’s safari journey includes a lodge stay with Chobe outings, followed by a Lake Kariba cruise in Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls. Although some itinerary names refer to the Zambezi, the overnight ship portion takes place on Lake Kariba.
| What you are choosing | AmaWaterways Chobe packages | CroisiEurope Southern Africa safari packages |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep aboard | Chobe River, on Zambezi Queen | Lake Kariba, on African Dream or Zimbabwean Dream |
| Cruise length | Three or four nights, depending on itinerary | Three nights in the core safari program |
| How you experience Chobe | Boat and land safari experiences within your Chobe cruise program | Land and boat safari outings during the lodge portion |
| What shapes the rest of your trip | Choices including Cape Town, Greater Kruger, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia or rail | Lodge time near the Zambezi and Impalila Island, Lake Kariba, Matusadona and Victoria Falls; Cape Town versions are available |
| My reason to shortlist it | You specifically want to sleep on the Chobe or pair it with one of Ama’s longer land routes | You like the combination of a smaller ship, lodge stay and Lake Kariba exploration |
When I would recommend CroisiEurope
I would look closely at CroisiEurope if Lake Kariba interests you and you like dividing your time between a lodge and a very small ship. Its core nine-day program includes three lodge nights and three cruise nights, with Johannesburg and Victoria Falls completing the route. Longer versions, including Cape Town, are also offered.
You still experience Chobe on excursions. The decision is whether you want your room on the Chobe itself or are happy to explore it from a lodge and cruise elsewhere.
I would also check how you feel about small-plane transfers, which feature in CroisiEurope’s core route. Ship size alone does not tell you whether the whole journey will feel comfortable.
How I would compare the cost fairly
I would ask for quotes covering the same travel dates, total duration and room expectations. Then I would compare:
- Flights: international airfare, regional flights and any required overnight stays.
- Accommodation: your actual ship cabin category and the named hotels or lodges.
- Daily spending: included meals, drinks, excursions and gratuities.
- Extensions: what is part of the base package and what you are adding.
- Travel days: how much of your time is spent reaching the next destination.
A shorter CroisiEurope package and a longer AmaWaterways journey can both be good choices. I would judge the price against the experiences you want and everything needed to complete your trip.
What I would settle before adding an extension
Choose the core journey first. Then decide whether an extension earns its place in your calendar.
Cape Town makes sense if you want city, coastal and wine-country experiences and your base route omits it. Zanzibar, where offered, can give you a beach finish. Rwanda deserves a separate conversation if gorilla trekking is a priority; I would review the physical demands and arrangements with you before adding it.
I would also discuss steps, boat boarding and your comfort on longer game drives. A small luxury ship does not make every excursion easy. Tell me what you need to enjoy the days, and I can check the specific arrangements.
If you are still choosing destinations, my luxury African safari guide gives you a broader starting point. Once you have a route in mind, use my safari planning timeline to think about when to begin arranging it.
